Participant Commitments

To remain eligible for scholarship assistance, Columbus Scholars must:

  • Prior to college, remain a resident of Columbus, Georgia;
  • Remain a full-time student in good standing in the Muscogee County School District or college during the regular school year;
  • Maintain a 3.0 grade point average, taken in aggregate (However, you are eligible to apply to the Board for a hardship renewal of the scholarship if the student’s grade falls below 3.0.);
  • Scholar shall attend mandatory weekly tutoring sessions if requested by Columbus Scholars should any grade be below a C until the grade is a B at the end of a grading period;
  • Attend monthly educational and enrichment meetings and other educational programs as directed by the Columbus Scholars (After two unexcused absences, the Board has the option to place you on probation; a third unexcused absence during a calendar year may result in the forfeiture of your scholarship.);
  • The parent/guardian agrees to provide transportation or arrange transportation for their child to attend Columbus Scholars enrichment meetings, Columbus Scholars summer program and any other Columbus Scholars program;
  • The parent/guardian agrees to attend all orientation sessions, parent/guardian workshops, two enrichment sessions a year and any other required parent/guardian meetings;
  • The parent/guardian agrees to provide child’s grades and any other academic performance materials (including ‘parent portal’ access) requested by CSP and/or BBBSCV. The Parent/guardian agrees not to bring any legal action (including but not limited to any action under FERPA) against BBBSCV or CSP in connection with this sharing of scholastic data;
  • The parent/guardian agrees to sign a FERPA letter waiver that allows Columbus Scholars, Inc., Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Chattahoochee Valley and the mentor of the child to obtain all information and grade from the Muscogee County School District;
  • Scholar agrees to attend CSP’s Academic Summer Camp as directed by the board of CSP and to attend school-year tutorial sessions as deemed necessary by CSP and/or BBBSCV;
  • The parent/guardian understands that their child will be required to apply for and then attend Arnold Middle School Magnet Program or Richards Middle School IB Program and that their child will be required to apply for and then attend Columbus High School Magnet Program or Hardaway High School IB Program;
  • The parent/guardian understands that their child will be required to apply for the Hope Now Program sponsored by NeighborWorks Columbus that requires that they obtain a job and earn and save $500 while in high school that will be matched by their college and/or Neighborworks Columbus to provide additional scholarship funds of $2,000;
  • Agree to not apply for any loan or incur any debt from any college  without the written consent of Columbus Scholars, Inc.;
  • Sign any documents requested by Columbus Scholars, Inc. including amendments to the commitment letter; and
  • Scholar shall not become a mother or father of a child and shall not be convicted of any crime of moral turpitude.
